Free Baby and Toddler Sleep Charts: Gentle Guides for Real Families
Wondering whether your baby is ready for a nap or why your toddler seems tired just as bedtime arrives? Our free sleep charts and guides can help you understand typical sleep patterns without turning your whole day into a strict schedule.
At Parenting Collective, I believe sleep support should be responsive, flexible and grounded in connection. Your child is a person, not a timetable. These sleep charts are here to guide you, not tell you that you are doing something wrong.
How much sleep do babies, toddlers and children need?
The amount of sleep children need changes as they grow. The general Australian recommendations below count sleep across 24 hours, including naps where appropriate.
Age | Recommended sleep
Birth–3 months | 14–17 hours including naps
4–11 months | 12–16 hours including naps
1–2 years | 11–14 hours including naps
3–5 years | 10–13 hours including naps if needed
6–10 years | Around 9–11 hours nightly
Use these as broad guides. Some children sit at one end of a range and others at the opposite end. A child’s wellbeing, sleep quality and day-to-day energy matter as much as a number on a chart.
Which sleep chart should I download?
Baby nap chart
A practical starting point if you are trying to understand the changing rhythm of daytime sleep. Naps evolve rapidly in the first year, and what worked last month might not work today.
Age-appropriate wake time chart
Helpful for noticing how long your child is comfortably awake between sleeps. Wake windows are clues, not rules. Your baby’s tired signs and individual needs still matter.
Tired signs guide
Not all children rub their eyes and yawn. Some become clingy, frustrated or suddenly full of energy. Learning your child’s early tired signs may make settling more comfortable.
Dropping naps guide
Wondering whether your toddler is ready to reduce or stop a nap? Look at the full pattern of sleep, daytime mood and bedtime before making the change.
Sleep checklist and older child sleep guide
Useful for reflecting on bedtime routines, sleep environment, daily rhythms and the needs of children beyond the baby years.
How to use a sleeping chart without becoming obsessed with the clock
Start with observation. Watch when your child naturally gets tired and how they cope between naps. Notice overnight sleep and morning energy. Then use a chart to check whether a pattern seems age-appropriate.
Make one small adjustment at a time. If your toddler is struggling with a late nap, review the timing before changing every part of the day. If your baby needs a cuddle or a feed to settle, that does not mean you have done anything wrong.
A calm routine, a suitable environment and a responsive adult can do more for a family’s wellbeing than trying to make every day look identical.
Does my child have to follow the sleep chart exactly?
Absolutely not. Sleep can be affected by development, illness, childcare, travel, feeding and family life. Charts are useful reference points, not tests you need to pass.
Can I use a chart for night waking or early rising?
A chart may help you spot a possible mismatch between naps and bedtime, but it cannot diagnose every cause of night waking or early starts. Consider your child’s overall sleep, comfort and connection needs. For specific guidance, read our Early Morning Waking article.
What if my baby or toddler needs support to fall asleep?
You can respond with comfort, closeness and reassurance. A nurturing bedtime and clear, age-appropriate boundaries can work together. Parenting Collective does not use Cry It Out.
